Sarawak’s development ambitions are shaping IMETAL’s next investment cycle, with the building solutions company committing RM30 million to new and larger factories in Kuching and Bintulu. The expansion supports a strategy centred on manufacturing capacity, broader capabilities and a stronger position in the state’s construction market.
Executive Director of IMETAL (M) Sdn Bhd – Keng Ben Sen.
IMETAL designs, manufactures and installs metal roofing, façades, trusses and pre-engineered building systems, serving government, residential, commercial and industrial projects. Its proposition combines architectural considerations with engineering execution, helping customers translate building concepts into functional structures suited to local conditions.
That integration addresses a market gap the company identified early. While roofing components are widely available individually, building owners and architects often require a complete solution that meets performance requirements, design expectations and budget considerations. IMETAL’s approach brings these elements together through a coordinated offering.
In Sarawak’s tropical environment, the practical requirements are considerable. Roofs and façades must withstand intense sunlight and heavy rainfall while supporting occupant comfort. Increasingly, customers also expect these systems to contribute to a building’s visual identity, raising the importance of design alongside technical performance.
For IMETAL, that shift creates room to compete on value. The company sees purchasing decisions as involving both functional requirements and the confidence customers place in a brand. Its marketing strategy therefore emphasises trust and emotional appeal, supported by continuous product and service innovation.
The factory investment reflects management’s confidence in Sarawak’s direction as the state pursues higher incomes and higher-value investment. However, IMETAL’s approach to expansion remains grounded in financial discipline. Management regards financing as manageable provided the business maintains healthy returns on invested capital and sound cash flow.

Profitability and sustainability are its principal measures of growth. Higher sales volumes alone are insufficient if they fail to strengthen the business over time. This position places greater emphasis on differentiation, customer value and organisational resilience as the company allocates capital and resources.
Its ambitions also extend beyond expanding output within the same roofing segment. Concentrating on a single geographic market creates limits, making a wider range of products and services an increasingly important avenue for development. IMETAL intends to build on its established brand as it explores adjacent opportunities.
